Ignasi de Sola-Morales shared direction of the rebuilding and enlargement of the Gran Teatro del Liceo (1994-1999) and design of its furnishings with architects Llu?s Dilm?, Xavier Fabre and Eulalia Serra. The prevailing criterion: all things new used a modern design language which acknowledged the place and context of their installation. True to the aim of the project, the Liceo lamp is a large central light with a totally innovative spirit. Liceo lamps have been installed in the main lobby, the access from Sant Pau Street and the ticket office at the entrance to the theatre. Brass wire rings make up the frame of the irregular sphere, which is swathed in bronze wire used by airplane manufacturers. At the lower end of the uneven sphere is the vertical socket that conceals the source of the light that illuminates the inside of the lamp. The twisted, folded mesh creates a theatrical effect. The lamp is hung from the ceiling by steel cables. The electric cord runs between them to the ceiling rosette. It is a hanging lamp that is ideal for high-ceilinged spaces. The round glass globes which were the most popular lamps in the 1920s symbolized the sun because of their shape and light. Because of its broken uneven surface and the reddish hills of its soft mesh fabric which shines with a light of its own, the Liceo lamp could well be compared to a red giant.
